Like other Muslims all over the world, particularly adherents of the School of Thought of the Progeny of the Holy Prophet of Islam – Muhammad (SAWA) Ahlulbayt, Nigerian Shiites, particularly disciples of the country’s leading, most reverred and persecuted Shia Cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Yaqoub El-Zakzaky, had, since the beginning of the month of Muharram, commenced the mourning sessions of the martyrdom of the Grandson of the Prophet, Imam Husain (AS).

Like every other year, this year’s ongoing mourning sessions are taking place in more than 330 cities, towns and villages which comprised of the nation’s federal capital, Abuja, where the country’s Shiite leader who has about thirty (30) million disciples, is still being held in a kind of house arrest.

The mourning sessions are usually marked by processions with multiple-flags that mostly read Labbayka Ya Husain!, recitations of emotional eulogies, lectures and drama depicting the tragedy that befell the third of the 12 holy Imams on his 1470 km journey from Mecca to Medina, and to Karbala, which took him 23 days, where he was gruesomely killed alongside 72 of his righteous followers on Friday, the 10th of Muharram 61 AH, by the forces of Yazid Bn Mu’awiya; following the Imam’s refusal to pay allegiance to him because he was an epitome of disbelief.

Recall that last year, 2022, the mourning sessions took place in about 130 cities, towns and villages, which means this year alone, there is additional increase of more than 200 cities towns and villages where the mourning sessions are taking place.

Below are some of the pictures and videos of the mourning sessions:
