From yesterday, Wednesday evening to today, Thursday, the news that swept the world was the ceasefire agreement reached between the Hamas freedom movement and the Zionist State of Israel, which has been waging a genocidal war in Gaza for fifteen (15) months, following the reprisal attack launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023, against the oppression and blockade imposed on the Gaza strip by Israel for seventeen (17) years.
In this brutal genocide that Israel launched against the people of Gaza, it has killed more than 46,000 people, most of them women and children, including more than 200 journalists, leaving over 111,000 people injured. Two-thirds of Gaza’s buildings have been demolished, with all the hospitals operating in Gaza collapsed.
Despite the devastation that Israel has caused and continues to cause (since between the announcement of the ceasefire agreement yesterday and today, Israel has killed more than 80 people), Israel has not achieved the goal it declared as the reason for the holocaust in Gaza, namely the elimination of Hamas, and the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Of course, the announcement of the ceasefire is a reason for joy for the people of Gaza, especially children, and all the freedom fighters and justice seekers of the world in general, because from the day the agreement comes into effect (Sunday), there will be a break in the killings and destruction in Gaza, aid supplies will be able to enter, the injured will be able to seek medical care out of Gaza, the people will give proper burial to the kidnapped corpses of their loved ones, and people will begin to think about how they will return and rebuild their lives which Israel has destroyed. So it is indeed a cause for celebration, and a victory for the brave people of Gaza, but the story does not stop there!
Given the utter disregard for international laws and dishonesty of Israel and the US which supports her, the questions that will arise are:
1. If the US can force Israel to accept this agreement, which Hamas has accepted for months but Israel has refused to accept, why has the US not forced it to accept it since then? Was it that the Biden administration wanted the people of Gaza to be entirely annihilated?
2. Given how Israel acts with utter impunity, feeling that it’s above the law, and the support it receives from the US, will it implement this agreement in all three stages?
These questions must be raised considering how senior Zionists such as the Israeli Minister of Finance, Smotrich, are full of rage and dissatisfied with accepting the agreement, arguing that Trump, who “forced Israel” to accept the agreement, has only deceived them, and that the war be nothing but a loss.
Moreover, reports from Israeli officials like Ben Shapiro and other Israeli media outlets suggest that there is a loophole in the deal, claiming that Trump has covertly given them the greenlight to break the deal and continue with the war whenever they deem fit. Regardless, we hope that this deal succeeds to be a permanent ceasefire and that the people of Gaza find relief.
In the end, whether Israel accepts or denies, it is the loser in this months-long genocide, because it did not achieve its goals, and despite the killing of Hamas leaders, Hamas has not been weakened, rather, it came out stronger and more resilient than ever before, as opposed to what Biden tried to portray yesterday in his speech. And the world will continue to view President Biden and his accomplices like Blinken as perpetrators of an unprecedented genocide, and they will continue to be cursed.
My call to the international community that hopes to see the freedom of the Palestinian people is to continue to denounce the carnage meted on them by Israel in full support of the US, and continue to call on the International Criminal Court to prosecute those involved in the genocide, especially Netanyahu and Gallant, for whom the ICJ has issued arrest warrants. Do not stop boycotting Israeli products and the companies that support them, until the day we see an end to the occupation of the Palestinian people.
