The Chairmen of Governing Councils (CGC) of Polytechnics have made a bold call for the conversion of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) into a full-fledged commission, dedicated to catering to the progressive needs of Nigerian polytechnics ¹. This recommendation was made at a meeting held in Calabar, Cross River state, from February 9 to 14, 2025.

According to Dr. Y. M. Bande, the Secretary of the Chairmen of Federal Polytechnics, “the Committee observes some key issues that will enhance technical education and skills development for the future growth of the country. The skills development is the future of the world and the Nigerian youths cannot be left behind.”

The Chairmen made several key recommendations, including:

– Establishment of a Polytechnics Commission: to oversee the 787 institutions under NBTE’s supervision, including polytechnics, monotechnics, and technical colleges.

– HND/BSc Dichotomy: upgrading HND to B.Tech (Hons) with entry requirements of O’ level, National Diploma (ND), and Industrial Training certificate (IT).

– Absorption of Outsourced Staff: taking over cleaning and security services in polytechnics by the federal government.

– Power Supply: directing the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to power polytechnics by solar electrification.

– Skills Development Fund: creating a fund to empower skills training.

– Securing Polytechnics: securing polytechnics by fencing to prevent encroachment and ensure security of lives and properties.

These recommendations aim to revolutionize technical education in Nigeria, providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to compete in the global economy.
