The Bayero University Kano Alumni Association (Niger State Chapter) has called on the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics Bida Chapter (ASUP-BD) to have a change of mind on plonging the Polytechnic into frequent industrial actions for the benefit of students.

Members of the Association led by the State Chairman of the 2020 Electoral Committee, Mr Sule Shehu gave the urge when he paid a courtesy call on the Rector recently in his office.

Shehu expressed the Association’s displeasure over the development and advised the union against the use of strike as tool for solving industrial problems, especially in the 21st century.

“In the 21st century, we shouldn’t be using strike as a way to solve our labour issues. Like war, strike is never a solution to industrial dispute.

“I want to believe the allegations by ASUP-BD may not be totally correct, because of these channels that are known to exist in all tertiary institutions. Where all these avenues fail, I would advocate they go to court,” he noted.

The Union urged the Rector and his management team to expedite action in ensuring that the union’s legitimate demands are met, calling on the warring parties to consider the interest of the students and their future as well as the future of the country which relies on the students.

The Association also called on the union’s leadership not to allow its selfish interest override the interest of the larger polytechnic community.

“For this principal reason, we shouldn’t drag this situation longer than necessary. Our personal and selfish interest should really not come to play on the interest and future of our children and the nation,” it further said.
