In an unprecedented move, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof. Adamu Ahmed, conducted a firsthand inspection of the university’s staff residential quarters over the weekend—and expressed deep concern over their severe state of dilapidation.
The visit, which began at 8 a.m. on Saturday, covered the Silver Quarters, Quarter II, and Quarter III—totaling nearly 500 staff houses. This marked the first time many residents had received such high-level attention to their living conditions.
Prof. Ahmed was warmly received by residents who highlighted critical issues including leaking roofs, severe water shortages, collapsed toilet facilities, dilapidated roads, and security concerns.
Visibly moved by the conditions—particularly the dysfunctional toilets at Quarter II—the Vice-Chancellor immediately directed the Department of Physical Planning and Municipal Services (PPMS) to compile a comprehensive report of all complaints and begin assessments for urgent intervention.
To tackle the acute water scarcity in Silver Quarters, it was recommended that two industrial boreholes be drilled to ensure regular supply.
The VC was accompanied by key officials including Arc. Suleiman Mohammed, Director of PPMS; Auwalu Umar, Director of Public Affairs; Engr. Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Head of Bulk Metering; and Engr. Hussaini Ismail, Head of the University Water Section.
Residents expressed gratitude for the visit, describing it as “the first of its kind,” and praised the Vice-Chancellor for showing genuine concern for their welfare.
Prof. Ahmed assured staff that their well-being remains a priority and promised that the university would take swift, concrete steps to restore dignity and decent living conditions to all residential areas.
