Nigeria’s renowned Nuclear Scientist, Professor Sunday Jonah, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to harness the country’s Nuclear Energy Potentials for sustainable development
The World-class Nuclear Scientist spoke to Education Monitor Newspaper in an interview marking 15 years of devastating Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in Japan.
He said the Fukushima disaster 15 years ago triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami, sparked crucial conversations about nuclear safety and energy security worldwide.
Professor Jonah stressed that call on the Nigerian government to unlock the country’s nuclear energy potentials has become necessary in view of the crippling power shortages that Nigeria has been grappling with for decades, a solution of which is in nuclear energy.
“With its zero-carbon footprint and reliability, nuclear power can be a game-changer for the country’s energy mix.
“Nigeria’s nuclear journey began with promise, and recent commitments at COP summits signal a renewed focus on nuclear energy. Joining the global declaration to triple nuclear capacity by 2050 is a step in the right direction”, Professor Jonah highlighted
He said, “Nigeria must put in place necessary infrastructures to fulfill this obligation by leveraging on opportunities provided by the IAEA, the UN Nuclear watchdog sooner than later,”
The Fukushima disaster was a wake-up call for the global nuclear community. However, it has also highlighted the importance of nuclear energy in achieving sustainable development goals.
He pointed out that South Korea’s remarkable nuclear success story offers valuable lessons for Nigeria. From a humble beginning in 1958, South Korea has become a leading exporter of nuclear technology.
“Nigeria can replicate this success by investing in nuclear infrastructure and building local capacity. The country’s nuclear energy plans align with global efforts to combat climate change”, he reiterated
He said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been supporting Nigeria’s nuclear development by providing training, technical assistance, and guidance on nuclear safety and security.
“Nigeria’s nuclear ambitions are not without challenges. The country must address concerns about nuclear safety, waste management, and public perception”, he emphasized
Despite these challenges, nuclear energy holds immense potential for Nigeria. It can provide a reliable source of power, drive economic growth, and improve living standards.
The Nigerian government has set ambitious targets for nuclear energy. The country plans to generate 4,000 MW of nuclear power by 2035.
Achieving this goal requires sustained investment, policy support, and international cooperation. Nigeria must also build a robust regulatory framework to ensure nuclear safety and security.
As the world transitions towards sustainable energy, nuclear power is poised to play a pivotal role. Nigeria must seize this opportunity to secure its energy future.
Professor Jonah stressed that, “it’s time for Nigeria to unlock its nuclear potential. With careful planning, Nigeria can join the league of nations harnessing nuclear energy for sustainable development.”
