In a dazzling showcase of innovation and business acumen, over 100 student-led stalls transformed Ahmadu Bello University’s (ABU) Mamman Kontagora Square into a bustling marketplace during the ABU Students’ Representative Council (ABUSRC) Trade Fair.
The event, held as part of the 2025/2026 Cultural Carnival, drew not only students but also members of the university’s host communities, creating a vibrant atmosphere of commerce, creativity, and cultural exchange.

From handmade crafts and fashion to organic foods, mouthwatering pastries and beauty products, the fair was a testament to the entrepreneurial drive of ABU students. Attendees marveled at the diversity and quality of offerings, with products priced affordably to encourage patronage and support budding business minds.

Comrade Aliyu Halilu, Chairman of the 2025/2026 Cultural Carnival Committee, emphasized the fair’s role in fostering self-reliance among students. “In today’s challenging economic climate, entrepreneurship is not just an option—it’s a necessity. We recognized the impact of such events in motivating students, so we expanded this year’s edition to be bigger, better, and more inclusive than ever before,” he explained.

The initiative aligns with ABUSRC’s broader mission to equip students with practical skills beyond academics, preparing them for real-world financial independence.
For many young entrepreneurs, the fair proved to be a golden opportunity. Maryam Yusuf AD, a student vendor, beamed with satisfaction as she recounted her experience: “This fair gave me the perfect platform to showcase my products. The foot traffic was incredible—I made impressive sales and even gained new customers who promised to patronize me beyond today!”

Ibrahim Sani Haruna, a vendor from Samaru, praised the initiative, stating, “Seeing students take charge of their futures through business is inspiring. This is exactly what Nigeria needs—youths who are proactive, creative, and financially savvy.”
The Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Sahlu B. Junaid commended the ABUSRC, led by President Ibrahim Nazeer Kallah, for organizing such an impactful event.

“This trade fair is a brilliant example of how student-led initiatives can drive positive change. I urge the SRC to continue creating programs that empower students and foster a culture of innovation and self-sufficiency,” the Dean remarked.
Beyond sales and profits, the fair served as a networking hub, with students exchanging ideas, forming partnerships, and even attracting potential investors. The energy was electric, with live music and food stalls adding to the festive ambiance.

As the sun set on the successful event, one thing was clear: ABU is indeed “naturally ahead”, as students are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the entrepreneurs, innovators, and job creators of today. With initiatives like this, the future of Nigerian enterprise looks brighter than ever.
