In a magnificent display of Nigeria’s rich cultural tapestry, students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria hosted a breathtaking Durbar procession on Saturday evening as part of the 2025 Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Renaissance Festival. The event, themed “Honouring the Past, Uniting the Future,” transformed the university’s main campus into a vibrant showcase of tradition, unity, and national pride.
Organized by the ABU Students’ Representative Council (ABUSRC) under the leadership of President Nazeer Ibrahim Kallah, with supervision of the Sarkin Hawa of the Zazzau Emirate, the Durbar procession commenced at the ABUSRC Secretariat and paraded through the campus in a dazzling exhibition of Nigeria’s diverse heritage and ended at the Mamman Kontagora Square.
This year’s Durbar stood out as the most spectacular yet, featuring representatives from about 20 states and multiple ethnic groups—including Hausa, Gbagi, Igbo, Tiv, Yoruba, Fulani, Kanuri, and Ebira—among others, with about 600 people mounting horses during the Durbar procession.
The procession served as a powerful symbol of interconnectedness, with students from vastly different backgrounds coming together to celebrate their shared identity while proudly showcasing their unique traditions.
The representative of the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, attended as the Special Guest of Honour and the representative of the Emir of Zazzau, his Excellency Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli as the royal father of the day, further elevating the event’s significance. Also present were the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, and key members of the university’s management, including the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Sahlu B. Junaid.
Nigeria’s cultural diversity is one of its greatest strengths—a dynamic force that shapes national identity, fosters unity, and influences global perceptions. Events like the Durbar reinforce the importance of cultural heritage as a foundation for harmony, reminding attendees that despite differences, a shared sense of belonging binds the nation together.
The 2025 Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Renaissance Festival Durbar not only honored Nigeria’s past but also set a shining example of how tradition can bridge divides and inspire a united future. With its resounding success, this year’s celebration has undoubtedly raised the bar for cultural exhibitions in Nigerian universities.
