The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has secured the second position among Nigeria’s top universities in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. Globally, ABU ranks 1001-1200, with an overall score of 30.7-34.4.
Covenant University, a private Christian institution in Ota, Ogun State, claimed the top spot in Nigeria and ranks 800-1000 globally. Landmark University, another private tertiary institution, ranked third in Nigeria and 1001-1200 globally.
The University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, both placing 1001-1200 globally. Other top-ranking universities in Nigeria include Bayero University, Kano; Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA); Federal University of Technology, Minna; University of Benin; and University of Ilorin.
Oxford University was ranked the world’s best university, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. The 2025 THE rankings evaluated universities based on teaching, research environment, research quality, industry income, and international outlook.
