The Sports Secretary of Nigeria Customs Service Samuel Onikeku has revealed that they are doing all within their power to ensure the Female Basketball Custom team represents Nigeria at the continental this year.
He gave the assurance at the just concluded second phase of Zenith Women Basketball league in Abuja where his team came second.
According to him, Our target is to qualify for the continental, we’ve always said it that the volleyball team has been attending continental and I believe it’s time for our basketball team to step up to be able to go to continental, that is our target for this year.
Talking about his team performance, Onikeku said the team did not perform badly: “We can’t win all the time, you know the first phase we played seven matches and won all and this time we played seven matches and we lost just one so, we take it like that, it’s good that we lost a game here than for the final phase in Lagos to go and loose there, so loosing here will make us prepare more and not take anything for granted.
“We shall come out stronger after a defeat, so I believe that it will make us become stronger we’ll talk to the girls that they should forget about the loss, they should not put it to mind but rather prepare more. If you continuously winning you may get carried away or too relaxed, and you will not be able to prepare well so it’s better for us to lose now so that we can prepare now and be on our toes than to go Lagos and loss; where we will not be able to make any corrections” he said.
