Ibrahim Shehu Usman, the former Bursar of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, is a man who deserves commendation for his exceptional financial management skills and dedication to the university’s growth. However, instead of receiving accolades, he faces unfounded corruption allegations and unfair treatment.

Usman’s tenure as Bursar from 2006 to 2016 was a transformative period for ABU. When he assumed office, the university was on the brink of financial collapse. Contractors and creditors were owed millions, staff salaries and allowances were in arrears, and the university’s coffers were depleted. The situation was so dire that it threatened the very existence of the institution.

With unwavering determination and financial expertise, Usman set out to reverse the trend. He implemented innovative solutions, managed resources prudently, and explored new revenue streams. His efforts yielded remarkable results:

– All outstanding staff salaries and allowances were paid.

– Creditors’ debts were settled, freeing the university from suffocating liabilities.

– The financial situation was stabilized, ensuring no staff or contractor was owed.

– ASUU arrears and staff promotion arrears were paid, boosting morale and productivity.

Usman’s achievements were not limited to mere financial management. He also:

– Converted the university’s Community Bank to one of the best Microfinance Banks in Nigeria without external consultants.

– Established a befitting head office branch in the main campus and a branch in Kongo campus.

– Introduced a 100% interest-free financial assistance program for staff, benefiting thousands of employees.

– Advanced N400 million to resuscitate Kongo Conference Hotel, jointly owned by ABU and NNDC.

– Recruited a talented team of bursary staff through a transparent and unbiased process.

– Updated and audited abandoned financial records, ensuring compliance with statutory provisions.

– Merged separate university accounts into a single, unified system.

Despite these remarkable accomplishments, Usman’s foes chose to assassinate his character, leveling unfounded allegations against him. In a desperate attempt to tarnish his reputation, they reported him to the authorities, hoping to silence him. However, their actions only serve to highlight the depth of their malice and the extent of their desperation.

Usman’s ordeal is a classic case of unfair treatment and injustice. A man who dedicated his career to serving the university and transforming its financial fortunes is now being persecuted for his efforts. His story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of false accusations and the importance of fairness in our institutions.

Ibrahim Shehu Usman’s remarkable achievements and dedication to ABU’s growth make him a deserving candidate for celebration. His innovative financial management strategies and commitment to transparency have left a lasting impact on the university. By recognizing his contributions, ABU can:

5. Learn from his expertise: Studying Usman’s financial management strategies can provide valuable insights for future university administrators, ensuring continued growth and prosperity.

In contrast, his foes’ tenure will be remembered as the worst and non-performing in the university’s history, marked by:

1. Mismanagement and corruption

2. Lack of transparency and accountability

3. Stagnant growth and decline

4. Poor staff and student welfare

5. Damage to the university’s reputation

By celebrating Usman’s achievements, ABU can distinguish itself as an institution that values dedication, transparency, and excellence, setting a positive example for others to follow. Usman’s legacy serves as a beacon of hope for the university, reminding us that with determination and expertise, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
