The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has implemented a significant operational shift in its student loan disbursement system, transitioning from a standardized 12-month payment arrangement to a flexible per-academic-session model.
This strategic change directly addresses the longstanding challenge of coordinating payments across Nigeria’s diverse higher education calendar system.
According to Director of Strategic Communications Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the new approach ensures that “upkeep disbursements align with each institution’s academic session,” guaranteeing that students receive their stipends “in a timely and relevant manner” according to their specific academic timelines.
The enhanced system introduces several critical improvements including the elimination of duplicate payments through sophisticated verification protocols, the synchronization of disbursements with individual institutional calendars to prevent delays, and the ongoing upgrade of NELFUND’s digital portal to automatically track and manage session-specific payments.
Importantly, the reform also strengthens financial accountability by ensuring funds are “utilized effectively by recipients” while maintaining “the integrity of the payment system.”
