Professor (sometimes abbreviated as Prof.) is an academic rank at universities and other post-secondary institutions of learning and research worldwide. Professor literally translates from Latin as “one who professes.” Professors are often leading authorities in their subject and elite educators.
In most academic rank systems, the term “professor” exclusively refers to the most senior academic post, also referred as a “full professor” colloquially. The term “professor” is sometimes used in conjunction with titles of lower ranks, such as “associate professor” and “assistant professor,” particularly in the United States, where the unqualified term is also commonly used to refer to associate and assistant professors.
Professors frequently engage in original research and impart their expertise through the teaching of undergraduate, graduate, or professional courses. In colleges with graduate programmes, teachers may guide and watch over graduate students working on a thesis or dissertation. In many universities, full professors hold executive positions like president, principal, or vice chancellor, as well as managing departments, research teams, and institutes. Professors are expected to be national or international leaders in their field of specialisation since their roles may be more public-facing than those of more junior staff.
The title of Emeritus Professor is typically awarded to academics who have excelled in their fields of research, service, and/or teaching throughout their time at an institution. Other criteria may include, but are not limited to, longevity as a professor, occupation of a demonstrable leadership role during the period of service at the university, manifestation of interest in postgraduate work in terms of supervising Ph.D. students, proven integrity, delivery of a valedictory lecture, and absence of indictment for misconduct while employed by the university.
