A lawyer and human rights activist, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, has issued a call to action for patriotic lawyers in Abuja to gather at Labour House today (Thursday, 29th, August, 2024) at 9:30 am in solidarity with Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Adeyanju condemned the police summons served on Ajaero, describing it as a clear case of government overreach and intimidation.

As the country prepares to swear in a new Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, the government’s actions have cast a dark shadow over the ceremony, highlighting the escalating persecution of labour leaders and erosion of democratic rights.

Barrister Adeyanju, part of Ajaero’s legal team, declared, “We will not stand idly by while the rights of labour leaders and citizens are trampled upon. I was supposed to attend the NBA President’s swearing-in ceremony, but I’m putting that on hold to stand with Comrade Ajaero. I call on all patriotic lawyers to join us in this fight for justice and democracy.”

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and fears of a looming dictatorship, with many Nigerians expressing solidarity with Ajaero on social media. As the situation unfolds, the nation and the world watch, wondering if Nigeria will slide into dictatorship or if the forces of democracy and justice will prevail.
