The Governing Council of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, FUDMA, has approved the appointment of Dr. Hassan Usman as the new University Librarian.

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, HE Ali Abubakar Jatau, announced the appointment shortly after the 40th Regular Meeting of the Council held on Wednesday, 29th July, 2026, at Hillside Royal Suites, Katsina.

The appointment followed the submission and consideration of the report of the Joint Council/Senate Selection Board on the Appointment of the University Librarian.

According to the Chairman, the appointment of Dr. Usman followed a rigorous and transparent selection process involving five shortlisted applicants for the position. The five applicants were interviewed by the selection board and the top three performing candidates were presented to the Governing Council for final selection.

Dr. Usman was born on 30th October, 1980, in Samaru, Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. He began his education at Samaru L.E.A. Primary School, Samaru, Zaria, and proceeded to Government Secondary School, Bomo, where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, a second Master’s degree in Library Science from the International University of Bamenda, IUB, Cameroon, and a Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D, in Library and Information Science from Career Point University, India.

The new Librarian has built a distinguished career in university librarianship spanning several years. He rose through the ranks from Library Officer to Principal Librarian at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he served in the Faculty of Education Library, Faculty of Social Sciences Library, and as Librarian of the Division of Agricultural Colleges, DAC. Prior to his appointment at FUDMA, he was serving as Librarian of DAC, ABU Zaria.

Beyond the university, Dr. Usman has served as a Member of the Kaduna State Library Board representing ABU Zaria, and as a Visiting Lecturer at FUDMA where he contributed to teaching, library administration, and academic support services.

An accomplished scholar, Dr. Usman has authored and co-authored several scholarly articles in reputable national and international journals. His research focuses on Library and Information Science.

The University Management said it is hopeful that his wealth of experience, vision, and dedication will strengthen the University Library, enhance access to information resources, promote research excellence, and support the attainment of the University’s strategic objectives.

Dr. Usman is married with six children.
