The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the indefinite postponement of the on-going 2020 internal Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations.
This was contained in a statement from the National Examinations Body signed by the Head, Information and Public Relations Division, Azeez Sani, and made available to Education Monitor on Sunday.
The statement said the postponement of the Examinations has become necessary “in view of the current security challenges, occasioned by the ENDSARS protests, which disrupted the smooth conduct of the examinations in some parts of the country”.
The statement noted that the security challenges arising from the protest has resulted to imposition of curfew and closing of schools in some states, difficulty for the Council to move examination materials across the country and Students in the affected locations were unable to sit for the papers already scheduled in the examination time table.
The statement assured that the Council will continue with the conduct of the examinations in all the states as soon as normalcy returns.
“While regretting any inconveniences this postponement may cause our esteemed stakeholders, the Council has however taken this decision in order to maintain the integrity and security of its examination procedures for seamless conduct of the Council’s examination”, the statement said.
The Council had in a press release, dated 21st October 2020, rescheduled some papers of the 2020 on-going Examination, but with the trend of events the protest is unfolding, the Council is with no opinion than to postpone the whole Examination
