The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Professor Adamu Ahmed, has urged academic staff to conduct research on the over 480 poems written by Sheikh Usmanu Danfodio, the 18th-century founder of the Sokoto caliphate.
The Vice-chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Bello Sabo, emphasized the need for more attention on these literary works to reshape the thoughts of leaders and students alike.
The call was made during a lecture organized by the University’s Faculty of Arts Committee on Seminars, Conferences, Workshops, Public Lectures, Research Grants, and Scholarships.
Professor Ahmed stressed the importance of appreciating the literary contributions of Danfodio and his brother, Sheikh Abdullahi Gwandu who were renowned literary scholars of their time.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Danfodio’s literary works, if properly documented, would help lift the academic standard of the Faculty. He also highlighted the significance of organizing lecture series, describing it as the faculty’s “selling point.”
Professor. Ahmed requested that the Faculty Arts Seminars Committee to send copies of lectures to his office for documentation.
The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the Head, Department of English and Literary Studies, Dean Faculty of Arts, and the presenter for a successful presentation.
He said this initiative aims to promote research and academic excellence within the university.
