Members of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) African Union Students’ Club (AUSC) simulated an African Union Summit on Tuesday as part of the club’s Pan-African Public Lecture and Alumni Homecoming.
The event was held at the ABU CBN Centre of Excellence in memory of the late Prof. Okello Oculi, founder of the OAU/AU Mock Summit. This year’s focus was African self-reliance, unity, and intellectual independence.
A major highlight was an interlude session in which students assumed the roles of Heads of State from Nigeria, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Zambia, and other member states. Others represented the Office of the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Speaking from the perspectives of the countries and institutions they represented, the students debated pressing continental issues and proposed practical solutions. The deliberations closely mirrored the tone and procedure of an actual diplomatic meeting.
According to the organizers, the simulation was designed to give students hands-on experience in diplomacy and international relations. Participants said it broadened their understanding of different national positions and underscored the value of dialogue and cooperation.
The program also featured keynote lecture by Prof. Muhammad Isah Abbas, poetry performances, and the unveiling of a book on Prof. Oculi’s Pan-African legacy. Speakers called on Africans to prioritize production, integrity, and responsible leadership.
AUSC Chairman, Comrade Ahmad Shuaibu Isa, said the club will continue to organize programs that prepare students for leadership and meaningful global engagement.
