The yearly peaceful Arbaeen Symbolic Trek in Abuja has been attacked by police today, resulting in the loss of numerous lives and injuries to mourners. The police have also arrested many participants.
According to eyewitnesses, the police used excessive force to disperse the crowd, leading to fatalities and injuries. Despite efforts to search all participants before the commencement of the trek, the police still attacked the crowd.
Currently, security agents are arresting participants of the Arbaeen Trek. Medical teams are providing treatment to those critically injured. Details of the casualties, including the number of fatalities, injuries, and arrests, will be made available to the press in due course.
In a further escalation of their brutality, the police also stormed a hospital in Suleja, Niger State, where wounded mourners were receiving treatment, kidnapping patients and taking them to unknown destinations. The police attacked the medical personnel treating the wounded, exacerbating the situation and putting more lives at risk.
Sheikh Sidi Munir Mainasara Sokoto, speaking on behalf of the Islamic Movement under the leadership of His Eminence Sayyid Ibraheem Ya’qoub El-Zakzaky (H), condemned the police brutality and confirmed the incidents.
“The police attack on our peaceful procession is a clear example of their brutality and disregard for human life,” Sheikh Sokoto said.
