The recent convocation ceremony at Federal University Lokoja was a resounding success, celebrating the academic achievements of its graduates. However, one unfortunate incident marred the happiness and joy of some guests who were officially invited by the vice chancellor to be part of the occasion: the unacceptable behavior of Accommodation Committee Chair, Professor Sarah Yani, also the university’s Chief Librarian.

Throughout the event, Professor Yani was reportedly rude and belligerent towards several guests, prioritizing her own interests over their needs. One alarming incident that has come to light is Professor Yani’s questionable management of accommodation assignments. She allegedly hoarded corporate rooms in choice hotels, reserving them for her friends and preferred guests, while relegating high-profile guests, including top professors, to local hotels.

This preferential treatment raises concerns about favoritism and potential corruption. Professor Yani’s actions suggested a conflict of interest, potentially driven by personal gain. Most concerning was her refusal to adhere to the directives of the university’s chief executive, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, regarding accommodation assignments.

This blatant disregard for authority raises serious questions about accountability and the integrity of the committee. Professor Yani’s actions compromised the dignity and reputation of the university, potentially deterring future attendees and damaging relationships with esteemed guests. Refusing to follow the chief executive’s directives undermines the university’s chain of command, leading to chaos and inconsistent decision-making.

It is essential to note that Vice-Chancellor Professor Olayemi Akinwumi and his management team are exemplary leaders who maintain a high standard of excellence and professionalism. Their commitment to providing a conducive environment for students, staff, and guests is evident in their friendly and competent approach. Unfortunately, Professor Yani’s behavior fell far short of these standards.

The university should investigate allegations of misconduct, review committee selection processes, and ensure accountability and transparency. By addressing this incident, Federal University Lokoja can prevent similar occurrences and maintain its reputation for excellence.

To address Professor Yani’s behavior, the university should:

– Investigate her conduct

– Review committee membership

– Implement measures to prevent similar incidents

– Develop clear codes of conduct for committee members

– Ensure accountability and transparency

This will uphold the university’s values, protect its reputation, and ensure that future events are conducted with integrity, professionalism, and respect for all attendees.
