Thirteen Years Without an Exceptional Scholar, Leader, Friend and Community Builder
Today marks thirteen years since the passing of Emeritus Professor Michael Olanrewaju Filani, an extraordinary scholar, distinguished university administrator, passionate community development advocate, devoted family man and, above all, a man of uncommon integrity, courage and conviction.
For me, remembering Professor Filani is much more than paying tribute to a distinguished academic. It is remembering a remarkable human being whose life touched mine in many meaningful ways and whose friendship, wisdom, encouragement and unwavering commitment to worthy causes remain unforgettable.
Our association had its roots in Egbeoba High School, Ikole-Ekiti, where he was my senior and distinguished himself by serving meritoriously as Senior Prefect for six consecutive years. Even at that early stage of his life, he demonstrated the leadership qualities, courage, discipline and sense of responsibility that would later define his remarkable career. Over the years, that early connection developed into a deeply valued friendship founded on mutual respect, shared convictions and a common commitment to education and community advancement.
Professor Filani was not merely an accomplished researcher and respected academic leader. He was an admirable administrator who combined intellectual excellence with sound judgement, humility, firmness of purpose and an exceptional sense of responsibility. He possessed the rare courage to speak frankly, defend what he believed was right and stand firmly behind initiatives that promised genuine benefits to society.
One of my most enduring memories of him was our joint leadership of the committee that championed the struggle for the establishment of a Federal University at Ikole-Ekiti. We worked together with determination, conviction and a shared belief that our community deserved greater opportunities for higher education and development. Although our original aspiration for a full-fledged university at Ikole was not realised, our collective efforts contributed to securing a campus of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti at Ikole.
That achievement remains a lasting testimony to his persistence, vision and extraordinary commitment to the progress of our people. For Professor Filani, community development was never merely a subject for discussion; it was a responsibility to be pursued with passion, personal sacrifice and unwavering dedication.
Beyond his public accomplishments, I remember him most affectionately as a trusted and dependable friend. He was positively bold, refreshingly forthright, generous in his support of worthwhile projects and exceptionally trustworthy. His word carried weight because it was backed by sincerity and integrity. He was never indifferent when there was an opportunity to advance a good cause or assist others.
Yet, for all his professional distinction and public service, his greatness was equally evident in his personal life. He was a loving and devoted husband to his dear wife, Bimpe, an unforgettable father and a respected pillar of his family. His affection for his family, sense of duty and exemplary personal character were among the qualities that made him such an admirable human being.
Thirteen years have passed, but time has not diminished the significance of his life or the depth of his absence. Men of his character are not easily forgotten. Their influence survives in the institutions they helped strengthen, the communities they served, the people they encouraged and the values they upheld.
As I reflect on the privilege of knowing him, working alongside him and enjoying his friendship, I remain profoundly grateful to God for his life. I miss his wise counsel, his forthrightness, his reassuring support and the confidence that came from knowing that, whenever a worthy cause needed a dependable champion, Professor Filani could be counted upon.
To his beloved wife, Bimpe, his children and the entire Filani family, I extend my continuing affection and prayers. May the enduring honour of his name and the cherished memories of his remarkable life remain a source of pride, strength and consolation.
My dear Professor Lanre Filani, you lived purposefully, served honourably and left footprints that time cannot erase. Your departure created a vacuum, but your legacy remains an inspiration. You are sorely missed, deeply appreciated and forever remembered.
May Almighty God continue to grant your noble soul eternal rest and bless the family and loved ones you left behind.
