The Senate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has approved the commencement of B.Sc degrees in Broadcasting and Strategic Communication, to run alongside the existing B.Sc degree in Mass Communication.
The Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Adama Adamu, disclosed this in a chat with Education Monitor recently.
Dr. Adamu said the approval was granted during the Senate meeting held on Thursday, 30th July, 2026.
“It is my pleasure to inform you that the Senate of Ahmadu Bello University has, on 30th July, 2026, approved the running of two (2) additional programmes in the Department of Mass Communication, thus:
1. BSc Broadcasting
2. BSc Strategic Communication.
This is another feather added to the Department.” She stated
The new programmes are part of the ongoing national unbundling of Mass Communication into specialized fields, in line with directives from the National Universities Commission, NUC.
She added that, “This approval marks a new chapter for ABU and for media education in Nigeria. It is aimed at producing graduates who are not just mass communicators, but specialists who can lead, innovate, and compete in broadcasting, strategic communication, public relations, and digital media.”
The achievement has been widely attributed to the visionary leadership of Dr. Adamu, whose sustained efforts to reposition the Department and align it with global best practices were instrumental in securing the Senate’s approval.
Alumni, staff, and students have described the development as a landmark step that will further strengthen ABU’s reputation as a leading centre for media and communication studies in Nigeria.
The new programmes are expected to take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session, subject to final admission guidelines from JAMB and the NUC
