A professor at the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) in Borno State, Abubakar Mohammed El-Jummah, has died while in the captivity of Boko Haram insurgents, nearly one year after he was kidnapped.
Family members confirmed his death in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. They described the circumstances of his final days as “heartbreaking” and expressed profound grief over the loss.
Professor El-Jummah was abducted on March 2, 2025, along the Damaturu–Biu highway, a route notorious for repeated attacks and kidnappings in Nigeria’s North-East region. Since his abduction, relatives and colleagues had continued to hope for his safe return.
His death has intensified concerns over the persistent insecurity along the corridor linking Yobe and Borno states, where armed groups continue to target travellers despite sustained military operations.
The university and the family have yet to announce funeral arrangements.
