Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has announced plans to significantly increase its student admission quota for medical sciences, a move made possible by a major federal government investment.
The announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, during the 2025 Sponsio Academica ceremony for medical students held at the Abdullahi Mahadi Conference Centre on the university’s main campus in Samaru, Zaria.
Prof. Ahmed, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Raymond B. Bako, revealed that the decision follows the recent acquisition of a ₦4 billion Federal Government intervention fund earmarked for the university’s medical complex.
Highlighting the high demand for its programmes, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that while the institution’s current admission quota for Medicine is set at 180 students, the university receives nearly 3000 applications for the MBBS programme alone.
He affirmed ABU’s reputation for strong medical programmes and stated that the new funding would directly enable the university to “admit and train more students in these fields.”
Prof. Ahmed used the occasion to express appreciation for the dedication of parents, guardians, and the staff of the College of Medical Sciences. He assured them of the institution’s “continued support to ensure the quality of medical training for students.”
While congratulating the new graduands, the Vice-Chancellor advised them to see themselves as ambassadors of ABU and to always remember their alma mater wherever their careers take them.
