Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, commemorated its 63rd anniversary today, October 4, 2025, with a press conference by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, at the University’s Senate Building in Samaru.
Celebrating the institution’s six decades of transformative education and national development, the Vice-Chancellor reflected on the vision of the institution set forth by its founder, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto, in 1962.
Professor Ahmed said the founder, Sir Ahmadu Bello, who was then the Premier of Northern Nigeria, intended to establish a world-class university aimed at training the necessary human resources required for the development of Northern Nigeria and the entire nation. He added that the Premier envisaged an institution that is “rooted in service, excellence, and unity,” which would embody the diversity of Nigeria while serving as “a beacon of knowledge and progress.”
Tracing the institution’s origin, the Vice-Chancellor noted that, at inception, ABU started with just four faculties, 15 departments, and 426 students, and a dedicated cadre of academic and administrative staff drawn both locally and internationally.
He added that the university’s founding philosophy, articulated by Sir Ahmadu Bello at the opening ceremony, was “imparting knowledge and learning to men and women of all races without any distinction on the grounds of race, religion, or political beliefs,” and ABU ensures consistency with Sardauna’s vision.
Highlighting the growth of the university over the decades, the Vice-Chancellor stated: “The University has grown remarkably. Today, we boast 18 faculties, 110 academic departments, and a vast array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It currently has seven institutes, four colleges, and 17 research centers, besides being the National Centre of the UNESCO International Institute of Online Education (IIOE). Our staff strength has grown into tens of thousands, and we continue to be the largest single-university system in sub-Saharan Africa.”
Recording the remarkable achievements of the institution so far, the Vice-Chancellor asserted that ABU hosts more than 100 international collaborations and partnerships, adding that the university has over 600 professors, which is more than any other Nigerian university.
“Ahmadu Bello University is rightly called the ‘University of Universities,’ having midwifed nearly every tertiary institution in Northern Nigeria. Our alumni currently exceed 600,000, spread across the world, shaping industries, governments, and institutions,” he said.
Other notable achievements of the university include the establishment of the largest joint double-degree program in partnership with Central South University, Changsha, China, to train the next generation of railway engineers for Nigeria and Africa; the 2025 Times Higher Education best public university rank; the JAMB best university in 2025 for internationalization and diversity, among others.
“In 2025, the University secured a 5 million Euro Horizon grant for the multiplex AI project intended for the development of an artificial intelligence-powered microscope, to drastically improve the diagnosis of neglected parasitic diseases.”
“In addition, our staff and students have registered more than 30 patents locally and internationally, including those for the production of specialized capsules for high bio-ethanol yield; upgrading of heavy crude oil using bio metallic catalyst; extraction of artemisinin (active pharmaceutical ingredient) from artemia annua leaves; and development of Zoolite catalyst for crude oil refining. Our students have won several national and international ICT awards, including global Huawei competitions, demonstrating ingenuity, creativity, and competitiveness at the global stage,” Professor Ahmed added.
He, however, outlined major challenges facing the university, including funding constraints, loss of talented staff within and outside Nigeria, aging infrastructure, energy crisis and poor staff remuneration, which he assured that the management is doing all in its power to resolve them.
