The Federal University of Transportation, Daura (FUTD), is finalizing arrangements to send its students to China and Russia for hands-on practical training as part of their academic programs, Vice-Chancellor Professor Umar Adam-Katsayal announced Wednesday.
During a media briefing marking his two-year tenure, Katsayal revealed the institution is collaborating with its Chinese construction partner to recreate a successful exchange model previously implemented with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
“In 2018 and 2019, the Federal Government in collaboration with the company selected and interviewed some students from Ahmadu Bello University, specifically from civil and mechanical engineering, who were taken to China for two-year practicals,” Katsayal explained.
“These are some of our pioneer academic staff today and they are preparing our students towards realizing this plan.”
The proposed “3+2” program will see students complete three years of theoretical studies in Nigeria before two years of specialized training abroad.
The university has also secured TETFund eligibility to boost infrastructure and staff development, and initiated partnerships with domestic and international transport regulatory bodies.
He added that FUTD has drafted plans for campus expansion including smart classrooms and solar-powered facilities, with new programs in transportation security, aviation technology and smart transport systems.
“We are integrating modern technology in teaching, with plans to introduce smart classrooms and expand virtual learning platforms,” the VC noted, adding that research in autonomous vehicles and green logistics will be prioritized.
Despite these advancements, Katsayal acknowledged funding challenges affecting infrastructure maintenance and program implementation. The institution continues seeking additional resources to fully realize its vision as Nigeria’s premier transportation-focused university.
The university will soon introduce executive courses for professionals while expanding its academic offerings to include sustainable urban mobility programs, cementing its position as Africa’s emerging hub for transport technology education.
